Gemma Downham
Gemma has been fundraising in the NHS for 15 years and has expert knowledge in Grateful Patient Programmes through collaboration with Advancement Resources
Gemma started her career at Ogilvy & Mather advertising agency in Paris, working on IBM’s global advertising account for 27 emerging markets. She moved to an advertising agency in Cambridge working on the Visa, Johnson & Johnson, national brands and Cambridge University Hospitals accounts.
Gemma joined Addenbrooke’s Charitable Trust in 2009 and worked in major gifts, community, special events, corporate, trusts and marketing before being appointed Director of Fundraising in 2017. Since then she introduced the Grateful Patient Fundraising model to the NHS at Addenbrooke’s which seismically shifted the charity’s income and transformed the charity’s relationship with the hospital. Most recently she launched two successful capital campaigns for new hospitals in Cambridge (Children’s and Cancer Hospitals) and secured six, seven eight figure gifts, exceeding income targets. Gemma was elected as Public Governor for Cambridge University Hospitals in 2021. After 14 years fundraising for Addenbrooke’s, Gemma has joined Advancement Resources delivering specialist hospital fundraising consultancy, grateful patient strategy development, fundraising training and clinician training to UK hospitals and universities.
"Gemma introduced the first Grateful Patient Fundraising programme in the NHS to Cambridge University Hospitals. Since then we have seen an increase in donations and increased staff engagement with the charity."
